After rejection in Australia proceeded to England, enlisted 28th October, 1916, and, while awaiting promised commission in the R.E. Gas Section, served with above unit in France from 15th May, 1917, till evacuated to hospital in September. Rejoining battn. on recovery, was wounded 31st December. Died of Wounds, 3rd January, 1918, and was buried at Le Treport in Mont Huon Cemetery. Demonstrator in Geology. Early education at Sydney High School. Awarded by the Senate 1st Class Honours in Latin without Examination, on account of illness—an honour without precedent in the history of the University. Won the Nicholson Medal for Latin Verse on four occasions, the Lloyd Memorial Prize for a Latin Essay, and the Cooper Travelling Scholarship for Classics. He lived the most brilliant scholar, both in achievement and in promise, that the University has nurtured for a generation . . . —Fredk. A.
