B.VSc., M.R.C.V.S.,Listed in the back of the Book of Remembrance under Veterinary Science as being held in Australia to act as Director of Veterinary Services at Headquarters in Melbourne. he returned to his duty as Professor in 1917 and military authorities expressed high appreciation of his zeal, energy and capacity.

During World War I student numbers dropped to four; but for Stewart's 'courage and determination', the school might have closed. He lectured on every subject in the curriculum and it was some time before he could devote his attention to the study of veterinary medicine.
