Short description
E D Meldrum enlisted very early after the outbreak of World War I, on 4 August 1914. He was a Private with the 10th Infantry Battalion and embarked on HMAT Ascanius from Adelaide on 20 October 1914.
He became a Company A Scout, acting as a skirmisher, advancing forward of the main part of his Battalion. The job of the Scouts was seize Gun or Third Ridge following the landing- an extraordinarily difficult and demansing task. A large proportion of Meldrum's fellow Scouts were killed during these activities.
He survived the Gallipoli landing and fought at ANZAC for nearly 3 months before suffering a forearm fracture which resulted in his being evacuated and repatriated back to Australia in 1915.
