Short description
C W Martin joined the Army Service Corps in England and was attached to 3rd Divisional Train. Later he transferred to the Australian Army Service Corps, 31st Company, where he attained the rank of Lieutenant.
He enlisted for overseas war service with the A.I.F. in Australia on 9 June, as a Private and  embarked as a Gunner on HMAT Ulysses from Melbourne on 25 October 1916. At this time he was with the 23rd Field Artillery (Howitzer) Brigade.
He was later hospitalized in France at Etaples due to illness and while there was wounded by bombs dropped from a passing aircraft.
He returned to Australia in October 1918. After recovery from his wounds, he took up business in Adelaide as a manufacturers' representative.
