After returning to South Australia from service in World War I, H A Powell resumed his medical practice in Norwood. he was also appointed to the Adelaide Hospital as Honorary Assistant Gynaecologist. plus being appointed as a gynaecologist on the Consulting Staff at Queen's Home maternity hospital.
