Short description
H A Powell was 46 years old when he enlisted with the AIF in 1914. He was appointed II IC of 1 Australian Stationary Hospital. He then went to Egypt and was working to support the Australian Light Horse which was defending the Suez Canal at the time. He then went to Lemnos and was promoted to Commander of the unit in Decamber 1915. He established a location for the unit at North Beach, Anzac. Shortly after, he was promoted to  Lieutenant- Colonel  January 1916). Powell then travelled to England and served at Dartford, 3 Australian Auxiliary Hospital until June 1917. He was subsequently posted to  2 Australian General Hospital at Wimereux, France as CO. Powell was made temporary Colonel in July 1917, with substantive rank granted in 1918.
