L W Jeffries enlisted in the AIF and was first posted to 4 FdAmb and served in Gallipoli from the start to the end of that campaign.He was wounded, "red-tagged" as dead but survived by dint of his cigarette case in his shirt pocket. He was transferred to 50t battalion and promoted to major. He was awarded for conspicuous gallantry & devotion to duty and was gazetted in 1916. He was later twice Mentioned in Despatches for his services in France & Belgium. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel . From January 1918 he was Deputy Assistant Director for Medical Service for AIF HQ in London.
