Gurner joined the radiology practice of Stanley Verco in 1930. In 1931 he went to Vienna, London & the U.S.A. to study radiology.
On his return he went into partnership with Dr Verco and was appointed as Honorary Assistant Radiologist & Radiotherapist at the Adelaide Hospital and the Adelaide Children's Hospital
