Barlow started the first private pathology service in South Australia. In 1930 he became Honorary Medical Officer at the Asthma Clinic at Adelaide Children's Hospital and Honorary Medical Officer at the Vaccine and Asthma Clinic at Adelaide Hospital. He was Vice-President of the Pathology and Bacteriology Sections of the Australian Medical Congress, Hobart, 1934. Barlow was a Member of the Committee for Combating Infantile Paralysis, later known as the Crippled Children's Committee. He was a Foundation Member of the Australian Society of Allergists.
