B.A., B.E. (Mining & Metallurgy), B.E.(Civil). Mentioned in the Munitions section at the back of the Book of Remembrance as "a classical scholar and medallist in Arts and had then graduated in Engineering but was at the time, occupying the Chair of Mining and Engineering in the University of Western Australia. Professor Whitfield was from 1916- 1919 on service in the United States of America, also in Britain under the Ministry of Munitions as Assistant Inspector of Steel and later as Technical Advisor in the Department of Explosives Supply. His after career included most valuable work as the first Vice Chancellor of the University of Western Australia, in the history of which he will live as one of the most widely learned and practically gifted men who served Australia in the Great War."
