E L Symons was Cox of the University Eight Rowing Team while he was studying at Adelaide University. The team finished second in 1914, the last Universities Rowing Championship until after World War I.

Narrative - quote
After returning from World War I service, E L Symons worked for a year at Kapunda with Dr James Riddell, followed by a short period spent at Broken Hill Hospital. In 1921 he commenced practice in Yankalilla. In 1923, he went to Port Augusta,replacing Dr Peter Gorrie. He was the sole practitioner doing both obstetrics and surgery as part of his general practice work. He worked there for 18 years. It was a very busy practice, serving surrounding towns as well as Port Augusta as Port Augusta provided the only hospital in the area.
