M.C., B.E., Diploma in Military Science : Lieutenant, 1st Australian Tunnelling Coy., A.I.F., France. Enlisting in 7th Field Coy. Engineers in December, 1914, and sailing 19th February, 1916, as second-lieutenant in Mining Corps, served at Armentieres, Ploegsteert, Ypres and Hill 60, being gassed at Neuve Eglise in 1916. Transferring to Australian Mechanical and Electrical Mining and Boring Coy. about June, 1917, was with it until Armistice, mostly in Ypres salient, looking after power units for lighting, and pumping the mines and dugouts. Upon the capture of Lille, was engaged in search for booby traps, and in repairs to town water supplies. After the Armistice spent 12 months in England at various steel works studying metallurgy of steel. Awarded M.C. 1st January, 1918, and Mentioned in Despatches. Early education at Sydney Grammar School.
