After returning to South Australia after his World War I service, Hayward was appointed Medical Officer at the Barmera Hospital, South Australia in 1922.Later he moved to Perth where he worked as Physician and Anaesthetist at Perth Hospital.
He was a member of the Board of Health, Western Australia in 1923.
Hayward served with the Home Forces from 1941-45 as DADMS 13 Bde,Western Command and attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel during World War II.
