B.E. : Major, 5th Machine Gun and 20th Battns., A.I.F., Gallipoli, Egypt, France and England. Was seconded from 34th Infantry Regiment, A.M.F., 24th April, 1915, commissioned and appointed M.G. Officer 20th Battn. and, sailing 26th June, served at Gallipoli from 20th August until the Evacuation as 5th Brigade M.G.O. Appointed O.C. 5th M.G. Coy. and, crossing with it to France, was wounded at Pozieres 26th July and again at Bullecourt 19th April, 1917. From n th July to 5th September trained 5th Divisional M.G. Coy. at Parkhouse, Salisbury Plain, and, crossing with it to France 5th September, when it became 25th Coy., was wounded for the third time at Polygon Wood on 26th. In December was appointed Divisional M.G.O. and on 1st March, 1918, temporary C.O. 5th M.G. Battn. (newly formed in the Field), being second in command from April to 17th September, C.O. till 17th November and Adjutant until demobilisation. Mentioned in Despatches. Peter Nicol Russell Scholar. Early education at Petersham Public and Fort St. Model Schools. Later at Sydney Technical College (Diploma in Electrical Engineering, Class I).
