D.S.O., M.C., B.A., LL.B. : Major, 2nd Battn. and 6th A.L.H. Regt., A.I.F., Gallipoli and France. Enlisting 10th November, 1914, and sailing as trooper 6th A.L.H. Regt. 19th December, served at Gallipoli from May, 1915, to 17th September, when wounded at Ryrie's Post and evacuated to hospital. Returning to unit 10th November, was made temporary corporal on 13th, commissioned on 19th, transferred to 2nd Battn., and remained at Anzac until the Evacuation. Crossing to France in March, 1916, was appointed Bombing Officer 1st April and was Acting Staff Captain 1st Bde. from 3rd August, 1916, to 24th February, 1917; General Staff Officer (III), 1st Division to 10th July, 1917; Brigade Major, 2nd Bde. to 23rd November, 1918, and then G.S.O. (II), 4th Division until demobilisation. Promoted lieutenant, 12th March, 1916, and captain, 6th December; temporary major, 23rd November, 1918, major, 28th June, 1919. Awarded D.S.O. 3rd June, 1918, and M.C. 1st January, 1917, and Mentioned in Despatches three times. Early education at Sydney Grammar School.
