M.B., Ch.M. : Lieutenant, R.F.A. and R.A.F., B.E.F., France and England. Being a gunner in Militia before the War, sailed to England at the end of 1915 to join Artillery and was commissioned in July, 1916, after training at St. John's Wood and Exeter. Served with  B  Battery, 58th Brigade, at Arras, Somme, Messines, Bullecourt and Ypres, where gassed in August, 1917, and evacuated to No. 4 London General Hospital. Subsequently was employed on Home Service as Acting Adjutant, Department of Labour. Transferring to R.A.F. in August, 1918, trained as observer at No. 1 School of Aeronautics, Reading, but re-transferred to R.F.A. at the Armistice, and returned after demobilisation. Special Reserve of Officers, R.F.A. Early education at Sydney High School.
