M.C. and two Bars, M.B.; D.P.H. and Anth. (Oxon.), F.R.A.C.P.; Captain, R.A.M.C., B.E.F., France. Enlisting at Aldershot in 1913 and crossing to France 12th August, 1914, served with a casualty clearing station and a field ambulance, becoming R.M.O. 2nd Battn., King's Royal Rifle Corps. Was wounded at Loos in 1915, at the Somme in 1916, and at Zeebrugge in June, 1917, when taken Prisoner of War. Being released, returned to France in March, 1918, and was gassed at Arras but served until demobilisation, returning to Australia in 1935 to become Bosch Professor of Bacteriology. Promoted captain, 1st April, 1915. Awarded M.C. and two Bars and Mentioned in Despatches twice. Rhodes Scholar, 19 11. Rockefeller Fellow, 1923-24. Assistant Professor of Bacteriology, Harvard, 1926-34. Hon. Consulting Bacteriologist, Sydney Hospital. Early education at Sydney Grammar School. Later at St. Paul's College.
