LL.D., M.A. (Aberd.), M.A. (Oxf.), M.A. (Melb.); Vice- Chancellor, Sydney, 1927; formerly Assistant-Professor and Lecturer in English at Aberdeen, also at Aberdeen Training College, and for candidates at Oxford for the Indian Civil Service; Professor of English Language and Literature at Melbourne University, 1912-1927, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, 1917-27, President of the Professorial Board, 1924-27. On service with A.I.F., 1917-19, 2nd Lieut. Field Artillery Reinforcements, in April, 1918, attached A.I.F. Education School, Cambridge; Lieut, and Superintendent of Studies, Education Service, A.I.F., at Corps School, Rue, afterwards on Salisbury Plain; demobilised November 3rd, 1919. Early education at Gordon's College, Aberdeen : Blackwell Prizeman and Murray Scholar, Aberdeen; Exhibitioner, Christ Church, Oxford.
