Embarked for France June 1916; Fleurbaix; Somme; commanded Advance Guard Aus. Corps during first German retreat March 19171 and work specially commended; second battle of Bullecourt May 1917; Polygon Wood; Passchendaele; Messines; Hamel; Villers Bretonneux, and Ville sur Ancre; Amiens 8th-9th August 1918; St. Quentin; Bellicourt. C.M.G. December 1916; Cross of St. Anne of Russia, with swords; D.S.O. 18.7.17; Brevet Colonel for specially meritorious work 24.9.17; C.B. 3.6.18; C. de G.. Despatches six times (thrice specially). Returned 28.6.19. Appointment terminated 29.8.19.
