RALEIGH, GEORGE HEBDEN. 1898.
Geelong C.E.G.S.; former student of Arts. Joined British Army (on University nomination) 15.11.1899 in S. Africa as 2/Lt. 44th Regt. (wd Essex); Lieut. 11.3.1900; served throughout war, winning Queen's Medal with six clasps and King's Medal with two clasps; afterwards served in India and Burmah; Capt. 8.1.08; joined R.F.C. (through Air Btn. R.E.) 13.5.12.
In August 1914 took 4th Sqdn. R.F.C. to France; Brevet Major 22.6.14; in January 1915 led the first night raid on German positions. Sir John French's Despatches twice.
He was killed at Dunkirk on 20th January 1915 while testing a new aeroplane.
