OLIVE, WILLIAM MAJOR. 1910.
S.C. (Sgt. in Senior Cadets and a senior prefect in 1908); in 1905 gained
Diplom a of Royal Coll. of Music; Dux in M ath. 1909; Ormond; B.C.E.; Ar gus Scholarship in Civil Engine ering 1914; inter -Univ. hockey team; four years in M.U.R. and a first class shot; after graduating was in Viet. Railway Dept., and later a surveyor in the Lands Dept.
June 1915, Pte. Engr. rfts.; had pneumonia in camp; school of instruction, Broad meadows; later transf. 5th, F.C.E.; sailed 23.11.15 as Lieut. 5th F.C.E.; while camped near Canal saved a man from drowning; landed at Marseilles 23.3.16, and was killed in action near Armentieres on 23rd April 1916 (Easter Sunday) by a 4-in. shell. He was one of the first Australians to fall in France.
