From notes of Ian Jack, Senior Fellow, St Andrew's College: 'At Pozières, his gallantry during a long hour in the enemy trenches, wounded first by gunshot and then by a bomb, refusing ‘to be removed till he had seen all his men in safety’, was rewarded by companionship of the Distinguished Service Order, while the President of France awarded him the Croix de Guerre. '
