Early education at The Armidale School. M.C., Arts and Eng. : Captain, 1st, 3rd and 2nd Field Coys., Engineers, A.I.F., Gallipoli, Egypt, France and England. Enlisting 17th December, 1914, and sailing with 5th Reinforcements 3rd Field Coy. 15th April, 1915, landed at Anzac 20th June. Though sick in June and July, took part in capture of Leane's Trench 31st July and made survey and plan of Lone Pine 19th August, being commissioned and posted to 2nd Coy. on 22nd. After the Evacuation served with it at Tel-el-Kebir and Canal Defences and, crossing to France in March, at Fleurbaix and Pozieres. Transferring as secondin-command 1st Coy. at Mouquet Farm in August, fought at the Somme, Yarra Bank to Bapaume and Polygon Wood. From October, 1917, to January, 1918, was at Engineers Training Depot, Brightlingsea, England, and then appointed Adjutant 1st Divisional Engineers at the Somme and German break through Hazebrouck. Rejoining 1st Coy. 24th April, remained with it until demobilisation, except when acting O.C. 2nd Coy. during May and attending Fourth Army Infantry School in September. Promoted lieutenant, 1st December, 1915; captain, 1st January, 1917. Awarded M.C. 1st January, 1918.
