M.C., C. de G., B.A., L L .B .: Lieutenant (Acting Major), R.F.A., B.E.F., France. Sailing privately in March, 1915, was commissioned in Artillery on arrival in England 1st June and later sent to an Ammunition Column in France, transferring to 100th Trench Mortar Battery near Hebuterne in October and serving with it till April, 1916. Then joined  D  Battery R.F.A., being with it at Hebuterne, Somme, Pozieres, Thiepval, Bienvillers, Vimy Ridge and Ypres. Promoted lieutenant, 1st July, 1917; acting captain, 26th May to 17th June and acting major, 1st July to December. Offered captaincy in another brigade in December (there being no vacancy in his own) but decided to remain with unit. Awarded M.C.* at Passchendaele in October, 1917, and C. de G. (avec palme) at the Somme and Mentioned in Despatches. Killed in Action, Ypres, 14th March, 1918, and buried by Senior Chaplain of Division at La Clytte in presence of Generals of Division and Artillery, Staffs, Officers and 500 men. The ADRIAN CONSETT STEPHEN Memorial Prize was founded by his aunt in 1918. Member, Hermes Staff, Undergraduates' Association, Union Board, and Law and Dramatic Societies. Early education at Sydney Grammar School. Later at St. Paul's College. *  While temporarily in command of his battery under very heavy enemy shell fire, during an S.O.S. action, this officer, by his great coolness set a magnificent example to his men. To maintain the necessary fire he himself manned one of his guns, and during the same action, attended to and carried into safety a badly wounded N.C.O.
