M.C., M.B., Ch.M. : Major, A.A.M.C., A.I.F., England and France. Enlisting 20th December, 1915, and sailing after duty in camps 20th May, 1916, was R.M.O. 23rd Howitzer Brigade, crossing to France from Lark Hill at the end of 1916 and, upon reorganization of Artillery, R.M.O. 8th Field Brigade until July, 1918. Transferring to 10th Aust. Field Ambulance and thence to Corps H.Q., became, after the Armistice. R.M.O. 7th Brigade. While awaiting demobilisation, was sent to Sutton Veny Hospital until appointed S.M.O. troopship  Durham  and upon return served at Randwick Hospital till September, 1919. Awarded M.C.* and Mentioned in Despatches. A.M.F. : O.C. 1st Field Hygiene Section, 1928-31, then C.O. 13th Battn. (Lieutenant-colonel, 1931-35). Early education at Sydney Grammar School. *  Although under constant shell fire for a fortnight, he continued to attend to the casualties of his own and other units, on one occasion for a period of twenty-four hours without a break. During a heavy hostile gas attack he displayed the utmost devotion and disregard of danger.
