M.C., B.A., LL.B. : Lieutenant, 8th Training and 32nd Battns., A.I.F., Egypt, England and France. Enlisting in June, 1915, and sailing as subaltern 14th Reinforcements 4th Battn. 3rd February, 1916, transferred on arrival in Egypt to 8th Training Battn., proceeded to England in June and remained on its staff until January, 1917. Then served with 32nd Battn. at the Somme, Hindenburg Line, Messines, Villers-Bretonneux to Bellicourt, and until demobilisation. Awarded M.C.* and Mentioned in Despatches. Early education at The Armidale and Sydney Grammar Schools. *  During the operations near Fontaine-les-Cappy, on 27th to 29th August, 1918, he displayed great gallantry and initiative as a leader when his company commander was wounded. He took command, and handled his men with conspicuous success during the operations, manoeuvring under heavy fire with coolness and judgment. He was successful in filling an important gap between the brigade and the division.
