Arts : Captain, 3rd Battn., King's Shropshire Light Infantry, B.E.F., France. Enlisting in London as second-lieutenant 3rd Battn., 4th November, 1915, and crossing to France, was attached to 7th Battn. until wounded on the Ancre 13th November, 1916. On recovery was Acting Records Officer and later O.C., Sorting Office, G.H.Q., 3rd Echelon, Rouen, in 1917 and Camp Adjutant, British Section, Inter- Allied Tank School, from July to December, 1918. Then was Adjutant 17th Labour Group from January to March, 1919, when invalided from Marquion, being discharged from Wandsworth Hospital in May and demobilised, returning to Australia 20th February, 1920. Promoted lieutenant, 1st July, 1917; temporary captain, 1st August to 31st December, 1918; acting captain, 8th February to 2nd April, 1919. Early education Sydney Grammar School.
