M.C., B.E., A.M.I.E.Aust. : Lieutenant, 13th Battn., A.I.F., France. Enlisting 19th July, 1915, and sailing 1st April, 1916, as temporary sergeant with 6th Reinforcements 3rd Battn., reverted to corporal with Training Battn. and joined 13th on 21st October. Sent to No. 4 Cadet School, Oxford, 29th December, commissioned 27th April, 1917, and rejoined battn. near Messines, being wounded n th June. Returning again to battn. in September, was evacuated to England 19th December through injury at Templeux-la-Foise and, rejoining once more 7th May, 1918, was wounded again near Villers-Bretonneux 6th July and a third time at Proyart 8th August but, remaining in France, served until demobilisation. Promoted second-lieutenant, 27th April, 1917, and lieutenant, 4th November. Awarded M.C.* and Mentioned in Despatches. Early education at South Australian Public Schools and St. Peter's College, Adelaide. *  After a position had been occupied, an enemy machine gun commenced to enfilade the trench. With great dash and promptitude he led two men forward and captured the gun and killed the crew.
