M.C., B.A. : Lieutenant, 4th and 56th Battns., A.I.F., Gallipoli and France. Enlisting 24th August, 1914, and sailing with 4th Battn. 20th October, served at the Anzac Landing, but returned to Australia 10th June, 1915. Re-embarking 15th January, 1916, with 14th Reinforcements 2nd Battn., joined 56th on 27th March, crossing with it to France and serving until demobilisation, though wounded at Bullecourt 15th May, 1917. Promoted second-lieutenant, 1st February, 1915; lieutenant, 30th May, 1916. Awarded M.C.* and Mentioned in Despatches. Early education at Sydney Grammar School. *  He gallantly led two successful raids on the enemy's trenches, displaying great courage and determination.
