M.C., B.Sc. : Lieutenant, 4th Battn., King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, B.E.F., France. Enlisting in England in Officers Training Corps at the outbreak of War, was commissioned 12th November, 1914, and, crossing to France 14th April, 1915, served continuously as second-lieutenant in trenches near Ypres until wounded 7th November and again on 19th December. Awarded M.C.* posthumously and Mentioned in Despatches. Died of Wounds, Etaples, 27th December, 1915, and was buried in Etaples Military Cemetery. University Medallist (Chemistry and Mathematics). Barker, Deas Thompson and Caird Scholar. Slade and Norbert Quirk Prizeman. Early education at East Maitland High School. Later at Leeds University on 1851 Exhibition Travelling Scholarship. . . . He was thrown down and wounded in several places by the explosion of a trench mortar shell, but he rallied his men, distributed grenades and stuck to his duty till all immediate danger was over.
