M.C., Eng. I l l : Lieutenant, 45th Battn., A.I.F., France. Enlisting 14th September, 1915, and sailing with 1st Battn. reinforcements in January, 1916, was transferred to 45th on formation and, crossing to France, served at Pozieres, Bullecourt, Messines and Ypres till death. Promoted second lieutenant, October, 19 16; lieutenant, 24th May, 1917. Awarded M.C.* at Messines. Killed in Action, Passchendaele, 13th October, 1917. Commemorated in the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial. Early education at Newington College. *  He led his platoon with great skill and determination, capturing an enemy strong point, which he reorganised and held. He afterwards did most valuable work in extending his battalion front and in leading a reconnoitring patrol into the enemy country.
