M.C., M.B., Ch.M. : Major, A.A.M.C., A.I.F., Egypt and France. Enlisting in November, 1915, and sailing in December, joined 15th Australian Field Ambulance at Ferry Post late in March, 1916. Crossing to France in June, served at Fromelles, Somme, Gueudecourt, Bapaume, Le Transloy, Fremicourt and Passchendaele. Transferring to 2nd Casualty Clearing Station in February, 1918, remained there until demobilisation. Promoted major, September, 1918. Awarded M.C.* at Bullecourt and Mentioned in Despatches. Early education at Sydney Church of England Grammar School. * He showed the greatest courage and fearlessness in attending wounded while exposed to heavy shell fire and gas fumes, and assisting to carry them to the collecting post. The stretcher bearers had suffered severe casualties, and it was owing to his magnificent example that they maintained their courage and endurance.
