Pharmacy: Private, A.A.M.C., A.I.F., Egypt, Gallipoli and England. Enlisting 15th September, 1915, transferred to A.A.M.C. and was detailed to check up medical stores on transports, being subsequently appointed dispenser in camps. Sailing 23rd December with 1st Australian Dermatological Hospital unit, was promoted acting sergeant on arrival in Egypt, proceeded to Lemnos and finally to hospital at Bulford. Returning to Australia in April, 1917, was temporarily discharged to complete studies and on completion volunteered again but the Armistice precluded further service. Early education at  Bruntsfield  , Edinburgh.
