M.C., B.E. : Lieutenant, 4th Field Coy., Engineers, A.I.F., France. Enlisting in 9th Reinforcements 1st Coy. in July and sailing in October, 1915, joined coy. in Egypt in December. Transferring to 13th early in 1916 and crossing to France in May as corporal, served near Fleurbaix, at the Somme and Pozieres with 1st, 2nd and 4th Divisions, being acting sergeant in July. In August transferred to 4th Coy., engaging in all 4th Division actions until wounded near Bray 12th August, 1918, and evacuated to England, remaining there until demobilisation on non-military employment. Promoted secondlieutenant, August, 1916, and lieutenant, 16th November. Awarded M.C.* 26th July, 1918, and Mentioned in Despatches. Early education at Geelong College and Sydney Grammar School. * Two villages were reported to be strongly held by the enemy and although sniped at from their outskirts, he advanced with the greatest courage and determination, and by a thorough reconnaissance ascertained that the enemy had only a few scouts forward. He was then able to furnish information which enabled the brigade to take up a fine position and subsequently to inflict heavy losses on the enemy.
