M.G., D.S.O. and Bar, V.D., C. de G., B.A., Lecturer in Physics : Brigadier-General (Colonel), 1st Infantry Brigade, A.I.F., Egypt, Gallipoli and France. Enlisting 27th August, 1914, served as captain and adjutant 4th Battn. till 4th October, when injured and evacuated to hospital. Sailing 22nd December as O.C. 1st Reinforcements 13th Battn., rejoined 4th in Egypt 28th February, 1915, and went with it to Anzac, being wounded at Lone Pine 7th August. Crossing to France in March, 1916, remained with battn. till 1st March, 1918, when placed in command of 1st Machine Gun Battn. and on 6th June appointed to command 1st Australian Infantry Brigade, retaining command until 4th April, 1920, after return to Australia. Promoted major, 14th July, 1915; lieutenant-colonel, 18th April, 1916; colonel (temporary brigadier-general), 6th June, 1918. Made a C.M.G. in 1918, awarded D.S.O. in January, 1917, and Bar* in June and Mentioned in Despatches twice. Faculty Secretary and Student Adviser 1925-32. President, The Union. A.M.F. : Major-General, Commander, 2nd Division, N.S.W. Early education at Grafton Public School and Newington College. Later at St. Andrew's; and Emmanuel College, Cambridge.  While acting as Brigadier his prompt action and extreme resolution in repelling an enemy counter attack showed leadership of a very high order.
