Enlisting 17th December, 1912, was posted to H.M.A.S.  Encounter ; joined H.M.A.S.  Sydney  at Portsmouth on first commission in July, 1913, and served until June, 1917, when sent on leave till 31st August. Was present at the naval action with German light cruiser  Emden  off Cocos Is. 9th November, 1914. Returned after post-graduate course at Oxford in Theology in June, 1920. Chaplain, R.A.N., 1921-27. Early education at Cleveland St. Superior Public and Sydney High Schools.
