M.B.E., Arts III (e) : Major, R.A.F., B.E.F., France and Germany; also 2nd Battn. and A.F.C., A.I.F., France. Enlisting in April, 1915, and sailing 7th January, 1916, as second lieutenant with 12th Reinforcements 2nd Battn., crossed from Egypt to France in March. Transferring to England in September, joined A.F.C. in December and No. 3 Squadron (69th Squadron R.F.C.) as Recording Officer 12th January, 1917, and, crossing to France with it 24th August, served until January, 1918, when sent to England. Returning to France 16th March, was lent to R.A.F. as Wing Adjutant 15th Wing in July and to 22nd in August. Appointed to Staff, 5th Brigade R.A.F., 11th October and after the Armistice was an air staff officer with Army of Occupation on the Rhine, returning 10th February, 1920. Promoted second-lieutenant, 24th September, 1915; lieutenant, 12th January, 1917; captain, 1st January, 1918, and temporary major, 11th October. Awarded M.B.E. in 1918 and Mentioned in Despatches twice. Managing Editor, Evening News. Early education at Fort St. High School.

In December 1942 he was appointed director-general of public relations with the temporary rank of brigadier, and in this capacity he visited New Guinea, Britain and the United States in May-November 1943. Ill health, however, forced him to retire from active service in January 1944. ADB entry
