B.Sc., B.E., A.M.I.E.Aust. : Lieutenant, A.F.C. and 7th Field Coy., Engineers, A.I.F., Egypt, France and England. Enlisting 30th August, 1915, and sailing 30th November as lancecorporal with coy., served on Suez Canal Defences and, crossing to France in March, 1916, was wounded at Pozieres 5th August and evacuated to hospital. Rejoining coy. 23rd September, was promoted corporal in November and sergeant 1st May, 1917, and remained with it till 5th April, 1918, except when detached to Official Photographer in September. Then after training at R.F.C. School and No. 6 Squadron, was promoted second-lieutenant (pilot), 10th March, 1919, and lieutenant, 10th June, serving till demobilisation, and attending special course in Aeronautical Engineering at London University from April to July. Mentioned in Despatches. Early education at Newcastle High School and Newington College.
