M.C., M.A. : Lieutenant, 5th Machine Gun Battn., A.I.F. France. Enlisting 1st July, 1915, and sailing 9th October with 11th Reinforcements 7th Battn., was transferred to M.G. Section in Egypt. Served with 15th M.G. Coy. in France from June, 1916, till the Armistice except for eight months in hospital through injury and was slightly wounded at Fleurbaix, 25th July. Commissioned "In the Field ", 9th August. Awarded M.C.* for work at Harbonnieres and Mentioned in Despatches. Early education at Newcastle Collegiate School. Later graduate of Baptist Theological College and member of King's College, London, and University of Melbourne. * "He maintained close liaison with the infantry during the advance, and when they were held up he brought into action his own four guns, besides two other Vickers guns and a Hotchkiss, and silenced the enemy machine-gun fire, enabling the infantry to advance."—London Gazette, 7th November, 1918.
