M.C., Med. : Captain, 5th Divisional Artillery, A.I.F., Egypt and France. Enlisting 5th March, 1915, was commissioned 24th June, and sailing with 31st Battn., served on Canal Defences. Transferring to Artillery and crossing to France in March, fought at Fleurbaix, Somme, Hindenburg Line, Bullecourt, Ypres and elsewhere with 14th and 13th Brigades and 5th Divisional Ammunition Column till the Armistice, though wounded on the Somme 9th May, 1918. Attended London University for medical studies from January to July, 1919, returning in August. Promoted lieutenant, 20th February, 19 16; captain, 16th September, 1917. Awarded M.C.* and Mentioned in Despatches. Early education at St. Peter's College, Adelaide. * "Having led his men to an advanced position they came under heavy hostile fire, which exploded two of their dumps. Notwithstanding the constant explosions, however, and the fact that he was partially overcome by gas, Lieutenant Goldsmith stuck to his task until he eventually became unconscious for half an hour."—London Gazette, 9th January, 1918.
