M.C., Econ. : Lieutenant, 26th Battery, A.F.A., A.I.F., France. Enlisting in October, 1915, and sailing n th May, 1916, was with battery in France until February, 1917. Afterwards sent to St. John''s Wood Officers Training School and commissioned 14th June. Then fought with battery till wounded at Ypres in October, and on recovery served till demobilisation, though again wounded at Hindenburg Line in October, 1918. Promoted lieutenant, 14th September, 1917. Awarded M.C.* and Mentioned in Despatches. Early education at The Scots College. * "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty as forward observation officer with the right infantry brigade. He made a valuable reconnaissance and eventually formed an advanced post with some Lewis gunners in advance of our own protective barrage line, where enemy concentration could be plainly seen. His messages enabled the artillery completely to disperse two concentrations. Throughout the day he was under extremely heavy fire."—London Gazette, 19th April, 1918.
