M.S.M., B.A. : Lieutenant, General List (Education Service) and A.A.M.C., A.I.F., Gallipoli, Egypt and Palestine. Enlisting 8th February, 1915, and sailing 18th March with 1st A.L.H. Field Ambulance, served three months on hospital transport duty from Gallipoli to Alexandria and Malta. Landing at Anzac 5th August, was slightly wounded on 9th at Chalak Dere and evacuated to England but, returning to Fisherman''s Hut about 13th October, served with Ambulance until the Evacuation. Was at A.L.H. Brigade H.Q. from 6th September, 1916, until demobilisation of Division, being from January, 1919, Education Officer and from March in charge of Australian and New Zealand Mounted Division, returning in January, 1920, after three months'' non-military employment in France. Promoted staff-sergeant, 23rd July, 19 17; second-lieutenant, 6th January, 1919, and lieutenant, 6th March. Early education at Inverell and Grafton Superior Public Schools. Later at Teachers'' College.
