M.C., M.B., Ch.M. : Lieutenant, 33rd Battn., A.I.F., France. Enlisting 12th May, 1916, and sailing 17th November as corporal 5th Reinforcements, joined battn. as private in March, 1917, being sent to Officers Training Corps, Oxford, 7th June and commissioned 27th September. Returning to France, 8th October, fought at Warneton, Hangard Wood and Villers-Bretonneux, where gassed 17th April, 1918, and invalided to England, on recovery serving at Proyart and elsewhere until demobilisation. Promoted lieutenant, 8th March, 1918, and acted as signalling officer from 26th August. Awarded M.C.* for work at Warneton and Mentioned in Despatches. Early education at Sydney High and The Armidale Schools (Captain). * "He was in command of a party detailed to attack a strong point. He met with strong opposition, but gallantly led his men forward and put the enemy to flight. He destroyed two dug-outs and forced a machine-gun team to retire with its gun and was then able to cover successfully the flank of the raiding party."—London Gazette, 13th May, 1918.
