M.C., B.A. : Lieutenant, 10th Medium Trench Mortar Battery, A.I.F., Gallipoli and France. Enlisting 24th April, 1915, and sailing 15th May, served at No. 3 Australian General Hospital, Lemnos, until after the Evacuation. Transferring to 5th Divisional Artillery in May, 1916, as secondlieutenant, crossed to France in June and served at Fleurbaix, Somme, Hindenburg Line, Ypres, Hazebrouck, Villers-Bretonneux and elsewhere and was also Education Officer from 30th October, 1918, until demobilisation. Promoted lieutenant, 9th December, 1916. Awarded M.C.* and Mentioned in Despatches. Member of Teachers'' College. * "This officer, under heavy shell and machine-gun fire, succeeded without the aid of a carrying party in getting his 6-inch trench mortar emplaced, and by its fire cleared off some machine guns which were holding up the infantry. In five days'' advance he silenced many machine-gun posts, firing no less than 662 T.M. bombs in the process. He showed untiring energy.''‘‘—London Gazette, 7th January, 1919.
