M.C., E.D., B.E. : Captain, 1st and 3rd Field Coys., Engineers, A.I.F., Gallipoli and France. Enlisting 10th December, 1914, and sailing 12th February, 1915, as acting sergeant, served at Gallipoli in 3rd Coy. from May until the Evacuation. Crossing to France in March, 1916, remained with unit until December, then becoming Instructor at Engineering Base Camp, Etaples, and returning to company in January, 1917. Transferring to 1st Coy. 9th November as O.C., was adjutant to C.R.E. 1st Divisional Engineers from April, 1918, to January, 1919. Rejoining 1st Coy. 7th February, served as O.C. until demobilisation. Promoted sergeant, 4th August, 1915, and second-lieutenant, 3rd November; lieutenant, 20th February, 1916; captain, 7th November, 1917. Awarded M.C. 27th October, 1917, and Mentioned in Despatches. Peter Nicol Russell Scholar. Early education at Sydney Church of England Grammar School.
