D.S.O., M.B., Ch.M. : Captain, R.A.M.C., B.E.F., France and East Africa. Enlisting and sailing in March, 1915, served as R.M.O. 10th Battn. Loyal N. Lancs, from May, 1915, to November, 1916, being wounded at Mametz Wood in July, 1916, and at Beaucourt in November. Was O.C., "F "Coy. R.A.M.C. from March to July, 1917, and then in East Africa until demobilisation. Awarded D.S.O.* and Mentioned in Despatches twice. Early education at Sydney Grammar School. * "He displayed courage of very high order over a period of 48 hours in attending to a large number of wounded in his own and other units in a shallow muddy trench, which was continually subjected to heavy fire. On another occasion he dressed several wounded officers in the open. He was severely wounded."—London Gazette, 3rd March, 1917.
