Enlisting in September, 1914, and sailing in December with No. 2 Australian Stationary Hospital, served with it at Mena, Egypt and Lemnos. Was also present at Cape Helles Landing, with fleet sweeper Clacton between Anzac and Lemnos from April to June, 1915, and from October till the Evacuation O.C. No. 2 A.S. Hospital, Lemnos, returning to Australia in April, 1916. Early education at Christian Brothers' College, Perth, W.A.
