M.C., Vet. Sci. II : Captain, 4th and 2nd Machine Gun Squadrons and 1st and 6th A.L.H. Regts., A.I.F., Gallipoli, Egypt and Palestine. Enlisting 22nd August, 1914, and sailing with 1st A.L.H. Regt., served at Gallipoli from May, 1915, until the Evacuation, being wounded twice—on 28th May at Pope''s Hill and again on 7th August. Commissioned 28th January, 1916, transferred to 6th A.L.H. and seconded as Orderly Officer to 2nd A.L.H. Brigade H.Q. Joined 2nd M.G. Squadron 23rd July, seconded to command M.G. Training Squadron at Moascar, 8th August, 1917, and returned to 2nd M.G.S. 3rd November. On 6th December appointed second in command of 1st and later of 4th M.G.S., serving till the Armistice in such a way as to be commended more than once in the history of 6th A.L.H. Regiment : Beyond Katia Lieutenant Cunningham''s superb handling of a particularly good crew and his characteristic disregard of personal safety . . . was probably our salvation.Promoted lieutenant, 1st March, 1916; captain, 28th February, 1917. Awarded M.C. 4th June, 1917, and Mentioned in Despatches. Early education at Geelong Grammar School and King's College, Goulburn.
