M.C., M.M., Arts I : Lieutenant, 3rd Battn., A.I.F., Gallipoli, France and England. Enlisting 5th October, 1914, and sailing as sergeant 21st December, served at Gallipoli from the Landing to the Evacuation. Crossing to France with battn., served at Fleurbaix where wounded in May, 1916, and at Mouquet Farm where wounded in July. Seconded for duty with 1st Training Battn. in England, 7th November, and, rejoining battn. 6th July, 1917, served at Ypres and was Intelligence Officer from December to September, 1918, returning 24th December. Awarded M.C.* for work at Passchendaele and M.M. at Lone Pine and Mentioned in Despatches. Early education at Sydney High School. * When in charge of a patrol He was suddenly challenged by two of the enemy with fixed bayonets, at a few feet distance, and having no time to draw a revolver, he hit the nearest on the head with his stick and took them both prisoners and brought them to our lines.London Gazette, 22nd June, 1918.
