B.A. (Syd. et Melb.) : Lieutenant, 26th Battn. and Australian Wireless Section, A.I.F., France. Enlisting in December, 1915, and sailing 22nd August, 1916, with 20th Battn. reinforcements, was transferred to 2nd Anzac Wireless Section shortly after reaching England. Then joined Australian Wireless Section (Corps Signals) to act as interpreter on Front Line listening posts for detection of German telephone work by means of listening set (technically known as I.T.—Intelligence Telephone). Transferring to 26th Battn. as Education Officer shortly before Armistice, also served as Unit Repatriation Officer till invalided to Australia, arriving in June, 1919. Officier d''Academie. Associate Professor, University of Melbourne. Early education at Fort St. High School. Later at University of Paris and Tilly Institute, Berlin.

'Alan was to publish two volumes of memoirs: Men Were My Milestones (1958) and The Familiar Presence (1966)'.
